The Walk to End Alzheimer's

Every October in Eugene there is an event that is near to our hearts at Churchill Estates, this event the Walk to End Alzheimer's, supports a year round cause, fighting Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a disease that effects, or will effect, many of our residents at Churchill Estates. Alzheimer’s disease is the most known type of Dementia, which is a fatal disease that attacks your brain and over time shrinks it, disconnecting the pathways in your brain that affects your memory, speech, and motor skills.

Many of us know or have known someone that has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and have seen how it changes the person and affects his or her daily life. This is the why we support the Alzheimer’s Association, to get the word out about a disease that affects over five million people in the United States but is somehow still under the radar for us as a Nation. Right now there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, only medicines that may help ease symptoms and delay the progression if is caught early. We want to help fund the research that will find a cure.

This year the planning committee for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s used a few events to raise money and to drum up awareness for the walk. The first of these functions was the 2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Kick Off Ball, which was a party to get the community excited to create walk teams and raise funds. The Ball was followed by Pints for a Cause. This affair was graciously put on by Oakshire Brewery who donated $1 of everything bought throughout the day to the Alzheimer’s Association. Pints for a cause raised over $600.00

Friday the 18th of September the planning committee hosted the second annual Paint the Town Purple event in downtown Eugene. Centered around Kesey Square and the Broadway Lobby, local businesses, restaurants and bars came together to find different ways to donate to the cause. Some places had special items that they donated a percentage of and others donated a percentage of everything if the buyer was wearing purple. Holler and the Hive along with local favorite the Sugar Beets provided the entertainment. The Oregon Duck and Cheerleaders also showed up and joined in the festivities. A lot of fun was had by those who attended all these functions but they all lead up to what is considered the main event.

This year the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is on October 11th at 2:00 PM.  Please Join us at Alton Baker Park in Eugene and help us create awareness for this horrible disease, and raise money to help fund the research that will finally find a cure.
